The problem

Teams run regular, head-to-head model sweeps and expect clean, comparable results. The moment a gateway pools or shares rate limits, runs return partial completions or 429s and the whole sweep must be rerun. ML engineers at mid-size product teams report a day lost per bad sweep and monthly gateway noise fees of $40–60 on top of model bills (per reddit r/mlops and internal posts cited in the brief). Existing general-purpose gateways are optimized for chat and hide partials or pool quotas; open-source proxies can be wired to fix this but most teams lack the ops time to maintain per-route isolation. WHY NOW: multi-provider evaluation is routine in 2026 as teams compare 6–8 vendors monthly and blog posts show repeated 'rate limit cascading' and 'quota starvation' failures that specifically break evaluation experiments (see Tianpan blog and Dev.to analysis, April–May 2026).
