The problem
US residential solar installers keep going bankrupt (SunPower 2024, Freedom Forever Chapter 7 in 2026, TriSmart and others). Their customers lose the workmanship warranty, monitoring access and anyone to call. Manufacturer warranties still exist, but claims usually need an installer, and many local installers refuse to service systems they did not build, while door-to-door 'takeover' sellers target the confusion.
What people are saying
Thousands of homeowners are left without repair services or support for systems installed by solar companies that later went bankrupt. California alone has over 820,000 abandoned installations, according to Solar Insure data.

An installer doing someone else’s warranty work will not charge you for the part but the labor costs will feel like they installed a new system.

Sadly many companies skip on servicing third party systems since it’s a liability and not a profit maker.

This works fine for a few years but the burden is on you to spot problems and find someone to investigate & fix things.

Hire a third party Solar O&M company, that does maintenance and warranty/RMA work daily.

They installed the system, it had problems, they were going to repair it, then they went bankrupt, and now it's my problem.

Theirs is $999 and a technician visit. Mine is $50 and plugs into the box you already own.
